General Medicine
Medicine Programme: All you need to know if you’re thinking about coming to East Kent to join our Medicine Programme.
As one of the largest trusts in the country, you will be able to work and train in one or more of 80 clinical specialties. We run international courses in Gastroenterology and are a national PACES Examination centre for the Royal College of Physicians. We are a regional Primary PCI and the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit. There is a wealth of experiential learning at East Kent, together with experienced and enthusiastic clinicians who are involved in education and training.
We treat each and every doctor training with us as an individual and we will ensure that you are supported to achieve your goals in your chosen career paths. We also believe that it is extremely important for you to enjoy your job!
Why train and learn in the Medical Specialties at East Kent?
With two busy acute hospital sites at Margate (Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital) and Ashford (William Harvey Hospital), and Canterbury (Kent and Canterbury Hospital) providing subspecialties in Medicine, East Kent provides a unique opportunity to work in many different areas.
We offer posts within all the key major medical specialties including Ortho-Geriatrics, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Respiratory, Endocrinology and Diabetes, Intensive Care Medicine, Stroke, Rheumatology and Acute Medicine. In addition, there are specialised areas, such as Neurology, Haematology and Renal Medicine at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital site. Since COVID-19, our stroke unit has also been based at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital site.
There is a strong educational focus for Medicine for both undergraduate and Postgraduate Doctors-in-Training. There are weekly subspecialty teaching sessions and journal clubs, as well as weekly site-based and Trust-wide teaching such as Grand Rounds and IMT specific sessions. Through this high quality and dedicated teaching, we have achieved and continue to sustain a high MRCP pass rate.
What our Medicine doctors say:
“The Gastroenterology department is one of the busiest at WHH and I really enjoyed working there, I felt part of the team. Seniors (consultants and registrars) are very supportive approachable and reliable, always listening to junior’s concerns. …I have learned a lot on the job, from the handover and ward rounds and I had the opportunity to improve my practical skills by doing bedside procedures.”
“Working under Dr Albayati and Dr Judd was incredibly valuable, they are both experts in their fields and learnt a lot working underneath them”
“Staff support here is excellent. I was eased in to my post very delightfully.”
“My Clinical Supervisor, Dr Lobo, is also an exceptional Physician. I have learnt a lot from him in these few months than I could ever have thought possible.”
“I find QEQM to be a very organised place to work in”
