I have always been interested in education and actually taught before I started medicine. My career pathway was via Anaesthetics into Pain Medicine, though I have spent some years working as a Consultant in Palliative care. I recently spent a sabbatical working as a hospice physician in local hospices and I am back now as a consultant in Pain Medicine across the Trust.
In Medical Education I completed my QESP training and obtained a PGCE (clinical teaching) before studying for a MA in Medical Education, completing in 2010. I served as Foundation Training Program Director at William Harvey for five years, and am now on the faculty for the Long Term Conditions module Stage 3 offered here and contribute to other modules.
I am extensively involved in education at other levels, from professions allied to medicine to Pain Fellows and Anaesthetic SPRs. In addition to supervision at clinical and educational level I offer seminars and lectures on all aspects of pain medicine as well as palliative care in hospital, care within the last 48hrs of life, professionalism, resilience, aspects of medical humanities and caring for patients with long term conditions.

How long have you been involved in Medical Education?
Teaching is my passion and I have enjoyed teaching at various stages throughout my career over the past 20 years. I believe teaching as a best way of learning. Teaching has changed significantly over the last few years from didactic classroom based teaching to smaller group and self-directed reflective adult learning. There has been also been more emphasis on case based discussion. I have enjoyed teaching medical undergraduates of BJ Medical College Ahmedabad (India) in my role of Assistant Professor in Medicine and currently undergraduates from King’s Medical School, London attached to NOP firm (neurology, ophthalmology & psychiatry) for the past 4 years. I also regularly teach medical students during their clinical attachments, junior trainees and allied health professionals. I prepare myself in advance and provide high quality teaching relevant to the learner objective and seek regular feedback to improve this continuously. I have completed QESP part 1 & 2 and am an educational and clinical supervisor for the FY/CMT/GPVTs/Specialist registrars/trust doctors. I tailor my teaching according to the audience and usually get a positive feedback. I participate in undergraduate & MRCP OSCE exams on a regular basis. I am keen to develop my career further in teaching and given an opportunity, will consider for a formal diploma/degree in teaching in the future.

Having qualified as a General Surgeon and then specialised in Urology, I have been involved in teaching medical students, Foundation Doctors and Higher Surgical Trainees. I have a Masters in Surgical Education and a Post-graduate Certificate in Medical Simulation. I am a GMC approved Trainer, Educational Supervisor for Foundation Year 1 doctors and an Appraiser for Doctors.
Special interests
My interest is in a holistic approach to learning at every available opportunity, as clinical and non-clinical situations are extremely rich environments to accumulate knowledge and skills by observing, performing, deliberately practising and reflecting. I also believe each individual is an adult learner with his or her most productive method of gaining knowledge, retaining information and developing skills.
Teaching involvement
Medical Education is unique as one embarks on experiential learning in the hospital corridors, patients’ bedside, operating rooms and out-patient clinics. In addition to this, I have been involved in small group tutorials, formal lectures and teaching basic surgical and urological skills. I have supervised and assessed Medical Student Selected Components, participated in OSCEs and completed Workplace Based Assessments.
