Dr Ola Smith

Welcome to the Paediatric Training programme of East Kent Hospitals University Foundation NHS Trust. We serve a local paediatric population of about 150,000.

We are a dynamic and enthusiastic directorate with two main inpatient sites (William Harvey Hospital, Ashford and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother Hospital, Margate) and one children’s assessment centre (Kent & Canterbury Hospital, Canterbury). In addition to these sites, outpatient services are also run from other hospitals including the Royal Victoria Hospital, Folkestone, and the Buckland Hospital, Dover as well as other community based clinics.

The needs of both the Paediatric and GP trainees relevant to the curriculum are addressed and we encourage the development of speciality areas which are well established in our service. Some of which include Allergy, Cardiology, Community Paediatrics, Cystic Fibrosis, Epilepsy & Neurology, Gastroenterology, Respiratory, etc.

We are well supported by an excellent Medical Education Department and helpful administrators. Our library services work closely with clinical staff. We encourage a strong research ethos and are involved in a number of national multicentre trials backed by our active research and development department.

Our programme includes regular departmental academic meetings, journal club, radiology meetings and simulation sessions.

Our clinical and educational supervisors have a strong national and deanery medical education link and a good proportion of our Consultants have a higher postgraduate subspecialty qualification and close links to tertiary centres in their subspecialty area.

The proximity of East Kent to the Continent (35 minutes by Eurotunnel to Calais, France) and London (25 minutes to Stratford and 37 minutes to St Pancras) allows an excellent opportunity for both social and academic networking.

I hope that you are able to take advantage of the varied opportunities that exist within our directorate and that your time with us serves as the beginning of a sustained professional relationship in your career development.
