Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine Training Programme

East Kent offer excellent training opportunities on all three main sites in both Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine: Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, Kent & Canterbury Hospital and The William Harvey Hospital in Ashford. We are one of the largest hospital trusts in England, serving a local population of around 759,000 people.

Anaesthetics

There are excellent training opportunities in the following:

  • Chronic Pain

  • Regional vascular centre

  • Regional anaesthesia – dedicated upper limb lists

  • High risk anaesthesia – consultant lead high-risk pre-assessment clinics

  • Advanced airway management - lists available at alternate sites, including major head & neck oncology

  • Major urology – Robot-assisted laparoscopic procedures

We have an active and engaged group of consultants, clinical and educational supervisors.

We offer a high-quality experience in a broad range of subspecialties including: Critical Care, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Trauma & Orthopaedics, Regional Anaesthesia, General Surgery, Urology (including robotic surgery), Vascular, Maxillofacial & Dental, ENT, Ophthalmic, Pain Medicine, Radiology and Interventional radiology.

Intensive Care

At all main sites, you will be able to gain experience in various procedures including percutaneous tracheostomies, chest drain insertion, PICC line insertion etc with an active and engaged group of Consultants, Clinical and Educational Supervisors.

There are opportunities to participate in research and audit projects with an emphasis on contributing to improvement in patient safety and management and the opportunity to present and publish nationally and internationally.

Both the Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Departments offer a caring and supportive learning environment and deliver quality core curriculum topics through the following routes:

  • Weekly protected teaching

  • Weekly journal club

  • Divisional audit days

  • Excellent in-house simulation training
