RESPIRE 2019, the first regional neonatal and paediatric respiratory study day, took place at the William Harvey Hospital on 20 March 2019. It was organised by Dr Shaveta Mulla (Neonatal Consultant) and Dr Tim Newson (Consultant Paediatrician with Respiratory interest), to great acclaim from attendees and speakers for the event.

The study day had distinguished national and local speakers who gave interesting and topical talks. External speakers included:

  • Dr Theodore Dassios, Consultant Neonatologist and Senior Lecturer at King's College London
  • Dr Jayesh Bhatt, Paediatric Respiratory Consultant and President of the British Paediatric Respiratory Society at Nottingham University Hospitals
  • Dr Gary Ruiz, Consultant Respiratory Paediatrician and Senior member of Cystic Fibrosis Network (King’s College London)

G. Ruiz, O. Smith, V. Sharma

There were also expert internal speakers from the Trust who gave talks on their areas of expertise. Dr Vimal Vasu, Dr Ola Smith, Dr Tim Newson shared information about newer ways of delivering surfactant to preterm infants, case reviews of babies born with cystic fibrosis, and an update on chronic neonatal lung disease, to name a few.

Along with talks, the day also held a showcase of high quality departmental work and quality improvement projects by senior registrars Dr Akinnowonu and Dr Rana, and medical students Stewart Smith and Manini Bharadwaj. An important insight into practical aspects of babies going home on oxygen was given by our community nurses Charlotte, Marie Claire and Alison.

Special thanks to practice nurse educator Jean Halfacre for providing brilliant support and to Catherine Kidd for her administration. Without them both, it would not have been possible. Overwhelmingly positive feedback was received for the study day from a well-motivated audience, and the team are already looking forward to Respire 2020.
